ISLANDIA, NEW YORK ─ AUGUST 2017 ─ A deserving family with a special needs child will receive the lifetime benefit of free electricity as a result of an introduction made by Empire National Bank between two customers, SUNation Solar Systems and Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, a not-for-profit that provides therapeutic equine programs.
Empire National Bank thought SUNation might be able to help Pal-O-Mine Equestrian. SUNation’s Co-founder and CEO Scott Maskin met with Pal-O-Mine’s Executive Director Lisa Gatti. He was impressed with the remarkable work they do and wanted to help one of the group’s clients through his company’s not-for-profit, SUNation Cares. The organization supplies free electricity for life to selected individuals via donated solar systems. Gatti felt the Cusumano family would greatly benefit from this philanthropy. Parents of five boys, their oldest son is a child with autism. The family struggles financially to make sure Dylan can be part of the Pal-O-Mine family. SUNation’s donation of a solar panel system will completely offset the family’s electric usage. The $3,000 saved annually will be used for weekly Pal-O-Mine therapy sessions.
Past Recipients
The Howell Family — Ronkonkoma-based SUNation Solar Systems’ not-for-profit organization, SUNation Cares, turned on a donated solar system at the home of a deceased Long Island veteran’s family today. The award-winning company donated a complete rooftop solar-electric generating system and the gift of electricity for decades to come to the family of the late Thomas Howell III of Oceanside, NY. Eileen Howell and her three sons suffered a tremendous loss this year when Thomas, a Marine with the USMC 6th Communications Division, tragically lost his battle with PTSD and took his own life this past February.
On September 6th, SUNation Cares started accepting nominations for a veteran in need to receive a free rooftop solar PV system. Many nominations were submitted and carefully evaluated based on their story as well as their eligibility to benefit from the system. Through SUNation Cares, the Howells are gifted solar panels, labor, design and engineering services. Other vendors have also donated their services and/or products including PSEG, Colgan Tree Service, SolarEdge, and SnapNrack.
The Miller Family — Suffolk County-based SUNation Solar Systems’ not-for-profit corporation SUNation Cares provided a SUNation Solar PV System to generate free electricity to a family in need. The solar company donated a complete solar system, as well as labor, design and engineering services so that the Miller family, which has a special needs son Oliver. This charitable idea to help the Miller family inspired SUNation CEO Scott Maskin to establish SUNation Cares, a not-for-profit division of his company. He describes Oliver’s mother, Missy, as a remarkable person who has selflessly dedicated her life to her son. She was also instrumental in gaining approval of medical marijuana for the chronically ill in New York State.
On Friday, March 4, 2016 at 10:00 a.m., the Miller family gathered outside their home for the final day of installation of the donated solar system. An anonymous donor in Suffolk County donated her SUNation solar panels to this effort.
